What impact did the Romans have on us?

We've been focusing on place value and rounding these past two weeks, concentrating on where numbers appear on a number line and how the position of each digit impacts its size and how you'd round it. Here are the year 5s looking at city populations and then using the position placement to support rounding choice.

We have also been looking at coding in our ICT and what an algorithm is. To embed this we watched a dance instruction which involved simple directional jumps in a grid but this is basically what an algorithm is, except it was us following the programming not a computer. We realised how easy it is to make a mistake and how that meant the dance went wrong, in computing we call this a bug. Next week we'll make the algorithm on some coding software but here we are trying to perform the dance.

And finally, we have been looking at what Celtic life was like in Britain so far, but this week we moved onto the Roman invasion. We studied the differences between the Roman and Celtic approaches to society and battle. We compared warriors/soldiers and discussed how they'd both prepared.

What a frigthening sight - I wouldn't fancy taking on either of them, but who do you think looks best equipped for battle?

After this, we spent a short time modelling how the orgaised Roman army managed to be successful in battle by being well-trained and working as a team.

They look happy now, but just wait until the Celts take them by surprise...

Despite being outnumbered, they found it easy to march on through the field to their destination with little loss to their team. The Celts chaotic strategy was no match for the Romans.
We then moved on to looking at why the Romans wanted to invade in the first place and how one of the first things they did was to create a road network. Here we are tracking major Roman settlements and connecting the Roman roads together.
