Desert-island-survival workshop

This term we've been looking at natural disasters and focusing on Kensuke's Kingdom as our english and guided reading. With all this talk about difficult situations, we decided that it would benefit us to have a taste of the reality of just have difficult simple things would be.
What does survival mean? Quite simply, keeping yourself alive so we invited a specialist in who gave us some hints and tips to bear in mind. He spent the whole day with us discussing the most important aspects of surviving: Finding food and water, shelter and warmth.

We began the day by discussing how important making a fire would be and how with fire, we'd stand at least a shot of survival. We looked at the different ways in which fire can be created.

We all got to have a go at creating sparks and some of us helped with other techniques too.

Water is essential to survival of course, but our bodies are not well suited to drinking unsterile water but we looked at how even the most foul-looking water could be made suitable for drinking.

Would you drink this?

With some filtering, it's possible to clean this water and make it suitable for drinking. First we needed to make some filters, so we found natural things around the school ground to pack into a bottle (taking the place of a bamboo stalk)
We compared them all at the end to see which group cleaned up their water the most.
(P.S - you would also need to boil this water before drinking!)

Finding food would be a real problem so you'd have to get used to eating not your favourite culinary delights and perhaps consider more 'eco-friendly' products let's say.

We ended the day by building shelters. We discussed tips and natural materials around which could serve the purpose of tools, pegs and load-bearing poles

It was a great day and let's hope we never need to use these skills for real but it's always handy to know. We'll be using all this information in our writing for the next two weeks so watch this space.
