Good morning class 4 laugh

I had an 'interesting' birthday yesterday; do you know it's the first time I've ever been at school on my birthday before so for the first time ever, I got to wear the birthday hat!

Maths

Group one

In today's lesson I'd like us to focus on multiplying. We'll be using the short method. If ice-creams cost £2.83 and you greedily wanted 6 then how much would that be?

You'd need to set it out like I have below. Make sure you're neat, using one number per box.

Now the first thing you'd need to do is multiply each number by 6. So I'll do 6 x 3 first.

6 x 3 = 18. I can't squash 18 into one column, so I will carry the ten across into the next column and remember to add it on later.

 8 x 6 = 48. I didn't forget to add that extra 1 on so that made it 49. Carry the 4 across.
Notice I've put the decimal point in line ready. Without the decimal, your ice-cream price would be extremely expensive. wink

Now I just need to do the last one.

That's it. Perhaps check it with a calculator afterwards and mark them. If you got one incorrect work it out again and see if you can get it to be the same as the calculator.

Please complete the first ten questions.

Group 2

You have to do a bit of reasoning (we love reasoning) to work out what numbers were used to create the answer. So in number one I can see ? x 6 left me with a 2 in the units column.
The only numbers available are 2, 3, 4 or 7 so out of those, the only ones I could multiply by 6 to leave me a 2 in the units column is 2 or 7. (6 x 2 = 12 and 6 x 7 = 42)

So I'll try a 7. 6 x 7 is 42. Will that work with the next column I wonder.

So for the next column to work I need to be able to multiply 6 by something and then add 4 on and make a 3. Hmm, if that 3 was a 13 then before the 4 was added it must have been a 9. There's nothing you can mutiply 6 by and get a 9 so it doesn't workcrying that must have meant it was a 2 and not a 7. I'd now try 2 and see how far I get.

(P.S - there is a MUCH quicker and instant way to solve Q1 - 6 but I'm not telling you, perhaps you'll think of it for yourself... let me know if you do. And no... it's nothing to do with a calculator.)

Good luck - please do 1 - 9

English

How did you all get on with your determiners? AJ very kindly sent his in and he got 100% so I've uploaded his work for you to mark yours against.

Today we'll be moving on to prepositions. They tell us where something is. These are examples of prepositions: near, under, on, inside.

The BBC learning zone has prepared a lesson so we'll use that today. Please click this link https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zh8nscw and read through the explanations and watch the videos.
You don't need to do activity two because I've already prepared some work materials for us to do.
Find page 2 in your new English packs. It's mostly self-explanatory so your task today is to complete the whole sheet.

Reading

Please read for 30 minutes, find a quiet spot, maybe outdoors in the shade. Feel free to log onto any of the websites we've used in the past to listen to audio stories

From this point on, Mrs Barker has prepared some work for you to do. The idea with the learning project is to do some of them over the course of the week, one a day if you like, or just choose 2 or 3 to work on.

It's Mrs Barker here. I am going to be doing your class page while Mr Breckon is busy in school with the Year 6s. The page might look very different to what you're used to, but hopefully we'll soon get used to each other and it will work out well.

If you ever have any queries or questions about any of the work, or if you'd like to send me the work you've done, you can send it to my class email address, which is: class4@gfschools.co.uk. I would love to hear from you so please do! smiley

Spelling task:

I would like you to make a list of sport related noun phrases and/ or verbs to correspond with each letter of the alphabet. So for example, for 'a' you could have 'amazing acrobats', and 'b' could be 'bounce'.
You can record this in your exercise books or type it up.

Being kind..

I'm sure you're all super good at this by now, not that I'm saying you weren't before! Just keep this in mind, and make sure you purposefully do something kind today to make someone else happy.

Learning project:

The focus for this week's project is 'sport'.

The projects this week aim to provide opportunities for you to learn more about sports and games. Learning may focus on the history of sport, sporting-heroes, physical challenges and performances.

Choose one of these projects to start this afternoon. smiley

  ● Sport Genius - Research about sporting history and see how many different facts you can find out about sports from the past. Create your own sporting trivia quiz which you can test out on members of your household. Or you could place different sporting events from the last 100 years onto a timeline.

 ● Sporting Heroes - Select your favourite sporting star. Then you should draw a portrait of them in the style of the famous pop artist Roy Lichtenstein using felt tip pens or paint - you may need to research him first! Please send me you creation so I can share them all.

 ● Name that Sport - You could create an orienteering map of your home/garden. At each location you will need to create a question relating to a sport e.g. Which sport has the most rules? The answers can then be recorded on an orienteering sheet. Can you create an answer that begins with the letter of the next location? You can test it out on a family member.

 ● Beat It! - Begin by measuring your resting heart rate by counting how many beats in a minute. Then carry out an exercise e.g. running, skipping, star jumps etc. for 3 minutes. Once you have completed this you should carry out a recovery activity e.g. walking or sitting and see how long it takes for your heart rate to go back to normal. Repeat this with different recovery exercises to see which is the most effective at getting your heart rate back to normal the quickest. Can you create a way of showing your results?

 ● Anyone Can Be a Champion! - This activity is all about exploring the diversity of sport. You should research the history of the Paralympics. Discuss why we have the Paralympics. You should create a poster which presents the importance of the Paralympics and the range of different sports there are.
