Lindisfarne raids
13 Jun 2025
We love bringing history to life in class 4 and after learning about the first contact with Britain the Vikings had was the dreadful attack on Lindisfarne, with the monks at their monastery, we decided we had to act it out to embed the story and look at the view points from all those involved.
We know the Vikings attacked the monastery as it was in an isolated spot, with defenceless monks and packed with jewels, precious stones, glass and educated people (useful slaves) so they paid a visit in the year 793.
The children took roles of those who were involved and acted out freeze frames of the event, offering some thought tracking of the situation from their character's view. Now it happened, with putting on the play Peter Pan, that I had a cupboard packed full of swords and weaponry, which the children took great delight in using to support their scene.
I was quite s̶u̶r̶p̶r̶i̶s̶e̶d̶ ̶ impressed at how quickly the children were able to pull off being a boisterous rabble of brutes with such ease
but they did do a great job at showcasing the scene.

we then wrote about the event in our history books

Have a nice weekend
