Remote learning

08 Jan 2025

Hello class 4,

I'm sure we're all over the snow now and ready to come back to school laugh - I wanted to do a little bit of fractions re-cap before moving onto our new topic in maths. Please could you find some paper and complete these questions. Do let me know when we're next at school if you've found any of these tricky as we'll find time to go over it:

Adding fractions - remember, when the denominators are different, it's difficult so use your equivalents knowledge to make them the same and then add/subtract.

E.G 1/2 + 2/3 aren't the same fraction types but we can convert halves and thirds into sixths. 1/2 = 3/6 and 2/3 = 4/6 and

3/6 + 4/6 =  7/6 or 1 1/6

Please download this sheet if you'd like to do some further on this topic
-Add and subtract any two fractions.pdf-

Next can you remember when we looked at proper and improper fractions? Improper meaning when the numerator is MORE than the denominator so 8/5. This could also be written as 13/5. We know that since the denominator is 5, that it has 5 parts, so it only needs 5 parts to make it a whole. 5/5. If there's 8/5 then that's 1 whole (5/5) with 3 left. Meaning 1 whole and 3/5.
 Complete these:

Also try the other way, so 2 3/8 is the same as 19/8.

How did I get that? We can see the fraction is out of 8ths so 8/8 is one whole.

Another 8 makes 16/8 is TWO wholes and the fraction was 19/8 so that's still another 3/8 so 2 3/8 = 19/8

And finally, play some simplifying games:

Remember simplifying means putting fractions in their lowest form or numbers. so 50/100, 20/40 and 15/30 are the same as a half but the simpliest form is 1/2

To work out what a fraction is in it's simpliest form, you need to look at the numerator and denominator and find a number which is a factor (divides into) BOTH parts.
So 15/18... can you think of a number which goes into BOTH parts of the fraction. I can.... 3.

15 divided by 3 is 5 and 18 divided by 3 is 6 so it's simpliest form is 5/6

We've going to be comparing regions in geography and looking how people live in different places. The regions we'll be focusing on is the the highlands in Scotland, an area of Greece called the Peloponnese and the Amazon rainforest.
