Day two - canoeing

25 Jun 2024

Another action-packed day! We headed straight out for a day's canoeing, which involved starting further up the river Esk and making our way down a 2.5 mile stretch into Whitby harbour.

The first thing we had to do was unload the canoe by working as a team to carry it to the river

We then listened to the techniques required to steer the canoe, ensuring we communicated with our boat members and worked together to go the direction required.

After a few crash landings into the shrubs and narrowly avoiding some low-lying branches, we got the knack of it and soon covered some distance.

One of the highlights was getting to go down the weir; we learnt about how the old mill put one in place to power their wheel and we got to slide down it to the next section of the river.

Here we all are sliding down; it actually went surprisingly fast.

It was soon lunch time and we ate on small island which was lots of fun, and especially enjoyed seeing the train pass overhead.

We passed through a huge viaduct and played some games which involved throwing footballs into each others canoes - needless to say, it wasn't safe to get the camera out during this game so no pictures laugh

By now, we were arriving into the mouth of the Esk and could see the famous Whitby Abbey appear from the cliff tops. We loved our journey and we're very proud of the way we worked together to complete it.

You'd think after a busy day we'd be ready for some rest and relaxation... no, we had dinner and got straight into sledging. Here we are having the best time sliding down the dry-ski slopes

And there's nothing like a nice quiet England match to unwind at the end of a night but here we are ready to support England in tonight's game.

And that's it for now. Body boarding tomorrow and we'll probably be all looking forward to our own beds.
