Evolution

19 Jun 2024

We've been learning about evolution and genetics this week, looking at how Charles Darwin coined the theory 'survival of the fittest'. We studied how genetics come from our parents and how species evolve over time by reproducing with those successful genetics. We used food colouring to discuss how DNA from the parent species can mix, creating variation.

We had some fun imagining the possible characteristics and genetics which would be thrown up between the offspring of Mr Men/Little Miss characters. Here are some of our thoughts

We also looked at how the environment of a living things can cause adaptational changes in species such as within the peppered moths

It's fascinating as until the early 1800s, all peppered moths were white and speckled to blend in with the lichen-covered trees until the industrial revolution took hold and the soot from the chimneys covered much of the atmosphere black, thus creating an advance for those darker coloured moths to escape hungry birds. Soon this trait became the dominant variety.
We then used scientific knowledge to record these stages of change in the form of comic strip

We're really looking forward to our residential next week, please come to school via the hall at normal time and don't forget to do that bed-making homework!
