Who let the Gods out?

Our Maya topic has been focusing on how we can use artefacts to inform our understanding of how an ancient civilisation was like. We know that each new find can change our narrative of a time period and so our topic heavily focuses on using sources to draw out our own conclusions.

We've been learning all about Maya society with those considered important enough to live within the city walls and those who just had trades and lived in the rainforest outside.
People would trade with cocoa beans and only the rich would regularly enjoy it as a drink. Luckily for us, I could spare a few cocoa beans and we all got to try the raw form of hot chocolate
(being made below in the traditional way)

We did add a bit of honey to sweeten it, as they would have done but we have to agree that we prefer Cadbury's

We then focused on the importance of the Gods to the Maya in their everyday life - how their lives were dominated by ensuring the happiness of the Gods. They'd even make sacrafices of food, people and animals to please them. Here we are looking at a range of artefacts and deducing their purpose.

People would wear Jaguar masks and often Gods had animal feautres.

We tried to match the artefacts to their meaning by taking time to study what we could see, the shape, the material etc.
