Fountains Abbey

11 Apr 2024

This term we'll be studying the ancient Maya as part of our history studies on ancient civilisations. The children have been very excited to begin to learn all the fascinating ways of life of these people but before we get stuck in, we always consider where our topic fits in with world and British chronology and where abouts in the world we're looking. Here we are using an atlas to located what the modern-day countries which the ancient Maya inhabited are called.

On Thursday we were invited to Fountains Abbey, thanks to the River Skell Trust project where we could take part in stream surveys and wildlife investigations. There's been a lot of work done to improve the water quality of this river and now having had a lot of work done to it, we were recording our findings.

Some groups were investigating what is living beneath the river surface and were using indentification charts to classify their finds.

Others were taking readings of the current by throwing sprouts into the river and recording the time to cover set distances.

While others sketched sections of the river, looking for signs of erosion and other features.

We all swapped activities and had a great time.
