Welcome back everybody - I hope we've all had a nice half term. It's nice to be back

. We began the week hearing all about my Mexican travels, in readiness for the Maya topic we'll soon be looking at. The children learnt about the history of Maya and how it was discovered by the Spanish. But I think they were most interested in the samples of 'sweet treats' which were available so lots of fun was had.

We've started reading Kensuke's Kingdom in our guided reading, which will be used as a backdrop to our writing topic, recounts. We'll be making diary and blog entries based on the lead character.

In science, we've been recapping what materials we know of. The children had to guess what material was hidden in a bag and describe it to others in their group. The group had to listen carefully to the properties which were being used to describe and realised that many materials have similar properties so found it harder than you might imagine.

We then tested some of the properties of materials which weren't as easy to identify from feeling, such as the hardness, transparency and absorbency of them.

Finally, we've started to plan investigations to test materials for more complex properties, such as thermal insulators. we looked at how some objects are good at keeping the heat in and others at letting it pass through. With that in mind, we wanted to see which material would be best at keeping water hot for longer. We're midway through this investigation but we did start it and here's us in the process of collecting data.
