End of Spring 1
Mr Scott - 09 Feb 2024
It has been an absolute pleasure to teach Class 4 for the first half of the spring term, 2024. The children have worked really hard in their learning over the last five weeks and produced some oustanding work as a result. I will miss being in class with them every day, but I will still be in school to keep an eye on their progress.
In maths we learnt about place value, multiplication and percentages, always using real world examples to help our understanding.
In English, we have used the story of the Firework-maker's Daughter by Philip Pullman to inspire our own writing. The children worked hard to plan in detail and think about the audience and purpose of their stories, carefully selecting the grammar, punctuation and language to make their writing effective. They edited and improved their work and the results were amazing adventure stories that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.
In Geography, our enquiry question was 'Why Does Ripon Not Have a Train Station?'
The children started by completing research and drawing maps of the regions of England, with a focus on Yorkshire and the Humber.
The geography and history of Ripon gave us an insight into why the railway came to Ripon and why it was axed in the 1960s. The children enjoyed a field trip to the town to conduct a survey, discovering how much the public knows about Ripon Station and whether a new station would be a popular decision.
