A morning of meditation

23 Nov 2023

Last week we kick-started our world religion. This is where we follow a religious calendar from a world faith throughout the year, where we'll take part in festivals and celebrations and discover more about what it means to be a member of that faith. This year it's the turn of Buddhism.

We first spent an afternoon finding out general information about Buddhism and learnt all about how the first Buddha was a prince who was shocked to see the suffering in the world from outside the palace walls. He spent a lot of time in meditation working out the ways of the world before reaching enlightenment and teaching others.

On Friday a Buddhist monk was invited to come and share his experiences of being a Buddhist in the UK and what that meant to him and his everyday life. We were packed with intersting and well-thought questions, which he later commented on as being very respectful and impressive.

We were all very keen to experience what meditation is and gave it as good a shot as a bustling primary school allows. Needless to say, he explained that meditation doesn't have to be in silence and that with practice, you're able to shut out the noises of the world and experience deep thought and reflection. We really tried hard and enjoyed practising some of the methods.

On Tuesday, the year 6 also went to Crucial crew to learn about some key safety information about all manner of things. We had an enjoyable time and came away armed with a lot of useful information, which hopefully we'll never need to act on.
