Archaeology workshop

14 Sep 2023

This week we've got stuck in, literally, into our Tudor topic, maybe it was all this talk of finding Kings under carparks (like in the case for Richard III) but we just had to see what might lurk beneath our school playing field. Well, our finds weren't exactly on the same level but we did find lots of evidence of the school's modern-day life with the top layer being things we'd generally class as rubbish, but they all help to tell a story of what society was like at a certain time. However, as the day went on and we got deeper, we discovered some clay pipes (from the 40s or 50s most likely) coal, stones with fossils in, bits of pottery and old glass.

We had a very enjoyable day and it was good fun to learn about the work archaeologist's do and how that informs our understanding of time periods.

Here's some shots of us in action:

We also learnt all about the Tudor family tree and the key members in the family. The children were given names and tasked with identifying their position on the family tree... it took a while to place all of Henry's wives! We're looking forward to finding out just what caused a king to want to marry six times!
