Classifying animals

We've got quite a few pictures to add from the last few weeks from our science topic (cable to ipad turned up

)

We've been learning all about how animals evolved into their different animal groups and the characteristics each group has.

We began by looking at how life started in the seas, before looking at the challenges needed to overcome life on land - to breathe out of water. We learnt how fish evolved to develop lungs and grow limbs to conquer the lands around the water to form the group we call amphibians. We then looked at how reptiles evolved from these creatures but have scales to avoid drying out but this prevented them form living anywhere other than warm climates so warm-blooded animals came next with birds and mammals dominating our skies and landscapes with fur and feathers to insulate them.

We have been demonstrating this knowledge in the form of posters

We also looked at how insects evolved differently too and focused on the life cycles of the different animal groups. We watched how all insects start off in their larva form before entering their pupa stage where they undergo a metamorphosis and emerge as an adult insect.

Here we are studying some butterflies before setting them free to enjoy their new sunny, Nidderdale home.

Speaking of next week, on Wednesday we'll be going to Hackfall woods with the Rivers Trust to go pond dipping, learning more about insects in their larva stage and seeing what lurks beneath the water's surface. The children are invited to come in HOME clothes all day (dojo prize) but we ask that they wear loose-fitting trousers to avoid the nettles and sturdy footwear. They'll be leaving afer lunch but please provide a water bottle too.

Their homework this week is to make a real effort to learn those lines for the production next month - I've suggested they ask someone to help by reading the line above theirs and seeing if they can respond with the correct line.
