Roman day

07 Oct 2022

On Wednesday we all went to Fountains school to take part in an all-day roman workshop, which was led by John, an expert whose knowledge seemed endless.

We began by talking about the timeline of the Roman civilisation and recapped how that spread across Europe and eventually to Britain.

We then got to take part in exploring Roman artefacts. We were told about Roman life and then were able to handle and draw a range of artefacts, trying to deduce their purpose and material.

Later, we got to try out some Roman pass times including these logic-based games

And finally, we were able to try on various pieces of armour and gladiator wear. We were surprised with how heavy most of the helmets were to wear and how much your vision was impacted by them. Some of us were tasked with playing the role of a gladiator where one was fully armoured-up, including a great, heavy helmet whilst the other was less armoured, but had a heavy, lead-weighted net, which was used to throw at their opponents. Which do you think had the best advantage?

We all had a very enjoyable day and have had our understanding of Roman Britain improved.
