Evolution and inheritance

08 Jul 2022

It's almost the end of term and so we've begun our annual competition of designing holiday brouchures. We always love doing this, as not just our holidays in sight but it's great fun finding inspiring pictures and creating our dream holiday plan. We then put it all into a brochure and accompany it with persuasive writing which really 'sell' it someone.

Here was someone's effort:

Relax in this luxurious setting and enjoy the finest dining experiences; you'll forget your worries and let them gently drift away with the soothing ocean waves as you gaze upon your beautiful surroundings bathed in calming lights, watching the golden sun dip behind the horizon.

What do you think? Would you go?

Here we are hard at work making them appealing.

We have also been studying the works of Darwin and how his travels to the Galapagos resulted in the theory of evolution. His observations on the local finch population drew his attention to their differences in beak shape and size. Why would they be different? He noted that the environments on each of the islands was quite unique and that the birds had evolved to suit it.
With this in mind, we tried carrying out an investigation to see what 'beaks' were best for eating a range of items. Each group planned their own investigation: some to see how many items could be moved with the 'beaks' in a set period of time, others where the item could be gripped whilst moving and more.

And finally as it's almost the end of the year, we held a transition day to experience time together as the new class 4. Team work skills are ALWAYS what makes a class successful and so we worked on listening and communication skills. We had lots of fun.

All this happened whilst year six attended the annual leavers' service at Ripon Cathedral.
