Preparations for the coronation begin!!
20 May 2022
Class 4 have been hard at work preparing for a very special event; an event which hasn't happened for almost 70 years - a coronation. The Queen was coronated in Westminster Abbey in 1953 and we're recreating this famous event in Grewelthorpe's St James' church on Thursday at 1:30.
We do hope you can join us for this joyous occasion and then afterwards back at school for refreshments.
To finish our work on looking at the religious views of the Maya, we focused on their belief of the afterlife and the 13 layers of heaven and 9 layers to hell. They were very strong believers in the afterlife and we explored how this way of thinking still can be found across Latin America today. In most parts of central America, they celebrate some form of 'Día de los Muertos' where they believe spirits of those who have passed are awakened and able to revisit Earth and share experiences with their family. So this festival is quite joyous as it's a time to remember those we love and take part in things, eating, drinking and hobbies which their ancestors once enjoyed. They typically wear vibrant costumes and decorate skulls as a symbol of welcome and celebration.
We, as part of our art, experimented with creating simple shapes through using a medium of tools, cocktail sticks, ear buds and more to generate effective, bright and repetitive pattern to make our own Day of the Dead Skulls.
Once we knew what design and pattern we wanted, we were given our skull templates.
Painted a base coat...
Then took a lot of time to decorate them carefully as it was a very small space to work within.

And this was the end result - we were really proud of the way they came out!
