Nous apprenons le français et parcourons le monde.

14 Jan 2022

This week we have started our new guided-reading book called Kensuke's Kingdom. It's about an 11-year-old boy whose life is suddenly changed when his parents are made redundant. Faced with no work commitments, his parents consider taking time away from their usual lives to travel the world for a year or so, taking Michael out of school….. but, they intend to do this all on their small boat, the Peggy Sue.

Inspired by this, we have been looking whether this is something we’d like to do. We’ve been considering the pros and cons to such a trip and listed them. We talked about the places we’d like to visit and what we would gain by going there. Here's Molly and Jamie's dream around-the-world trip stop offs. Apparently Butlins just won't do.

We considered all the arguments for and against and placed ourselves on a scale of 1 - 10 (10 being in favour of the trip)

Afterwards we held two debates, one where we were in favour and another where we were against. The aim to convince our partner that our argument is stronger.

We then reassessed our positions on the scale and moved them accordingly. We had to justify why we'd changed.

As you can see, many of us were swayed over to 'in favour'.

Next week, we'll look at formalising our debates into balanced arguments.

French

If we're going to travel the world, then we'd better know a few foreign languages. This term our unit is to talk about the weather in French.

quel temps fait-il aujourd’hui?

Ask us and we may be able to tell you. We've looked at a range of weather types and have spent a lot of time playing games to memorise them. Some of us could even recall them all. It's important to get the pronunciation right too so we've been listening to that carefully before repeating phrases to our partners who then have to identify the weather card spoken.

And finally, if we're really going to travel the world then we ought to know more about the planet. Our geography is to study what natural dangers the planet can produce. We're focusing on volcanoes and earthquakes. To understand why they occur, first you'll need to know about the structure of the Earth, so we've looked at the layers of the Earth.

We are very much looking forward to finding out all sorts of interesting facts.

Happy weekend.
