Reading task:
Nothing has changed here...I would still like you to read for 30 minutes! Ideally, I would like you to read your school reading book or a book that is similar in difficulty. However, if you choose to read something else then that's ok too. As long as you're reading, I'm happy!

Year 5s I have set you an activity for today, which is about lines of symmetry. Remember to go through the lesson before you do the questions. If you find it difficult, you can go back to the lesson and have another go at the questions. I will be checking how you're getting on as the day goes on.
Spelling task:
Today, I would like you to create your own rainforest themed wordsearch.
You should begin by creating a grid, then add in the words you want people to find and then finally you should fill the gaps in with random letters. You can decide whether you give the person completing it the list of words to find, or not!
You can do this by hand or type it up. You could even decorate it with a rainforest theme if you like.
Writing task:
Yesterday, you wrote a description of the lush green rainforest. Today, I would like you to write a description of the contrasting image of a rainforest below. This is the Amazon rainforest after deforestation.
As yesterday, you're aiming to put a clear image in the reader's mind of the picture. To do this, you should use all your senses to describe it, and do it in an engaging way using figurative language.
Take the reader on a walk through this setting; you can write it or type it.
Being kind...
I am leaving this on here as a reminder so that you don't forget to always make the effort to be kind. This could be done in a variety of ways, it could be: some kind words when they are needed; a drink or snack made for someone; tidying up; dishwasher emptying; a message to someone who might be feeling down; a hug (to someone in your household); or something else, whatever it is, it will be worth it to make someone else smile!
Learning project:
The focus for this week's project is 'rainforests'.
The projects this week aim to provide opportunities for you to learn more about the world's rainforests. Learning may focus on the plants, animals and insects that inhabit the rainforest, food that originates there and weather patterns. It could look at plants and animals that can be found in the garden too.
This afternoon, you can either finish the project you started yesterday or you can start a new one.
● Deforestation: Destroying Animal Habitats and The Homes of Humans- Deforestation occurs in rainforests throughout the world. Trees are cut down on a huge scale, often to create space for grazing livestock or buildings. As part of this process, animal habitats and the homes of native people are often destroyed. Can you create a poster highlighting the impact of deforestation on both humans and animals. Can you think of possible solutions to some of these challenges and include these solutions on your posters.
● Welcome to The Jungle: Let Creativity Roar!- Henri Rousseau was a French painter from the 19th Century who created many paintings inspired by jungles and rainforests, although he never actually visited one. Can you explore facts about this famous painter and create a jungle/rainforest piece of artwork in his style. You could draw, paint or create a collage, depending on the resources you have available at home.
● Discovering Far off Lands- In the 16th century, Sir Walter Raleigh sailed the Atlantic Ocean in search of a place called El Dorado. His expedition took him to Guyana and his search led him to discover the country’s rainforest. 400 years on, a group of children have taken on the challenge to follow in Sir Walter’s footsteps in their own expedition to Guyana. You should watch the below clip and explore the others on the BBC Teach website. Can you plan your own expedition and consider what you would need to take with you. Alternatively, you could write a first-hand account of your time in the rainforest from the perspective of Sir Walter. Remember that Sir Walter would not have had access to the mod cons we do now.

● Rumble in The Jungle - Get that Heart Rate Going! - Can you increase your heart rate by challenging yourself and members of the family to mimic the actions of animals which inhabit rainforests. Actions could include: jumping over logs, ducking under branches, high knees through quicksand, running from a tiger etc. Can you record your heart rate (beats per minute) after each activity. Which activity increased your heart rate most?
● Deforestation: Our Climate and Our Planet- As well as impacting on animal habitats and native people, deforestation is also a major contributor towards climate change. Can you create an awareness leaflet about the effects of climate change on our planet and how deforestation is contributing towards this.
