Thursday 7th May

03 May 2020

Good morning class 4 laugh

Tomorrow is VE day but this one is special because it's 75 years since it happened. What famous event do you think happened on the 8th May 1945?

I'll give you a clue....

VE means Victory in Europe.

World war 2 was over for Europeans after 6 long years of battle and many lives lost. We're remembering it with celebrations and you may have noticed lots of flags being hung out and bunting stretched across streets.

As it's a special day, I thought we'd change our normal routine and do some work themed on World War 2.

Watch this video clip about VE day https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks2-ve-day/z7xtmfr

One way of celebrating is to decorate your house in red, white and blue (like the colours of our flag) I've provided a blank British flag in your NEW pack. I'd like you to colour it in correctly, it can be a bit tricky so look at the picture of the top of this page or find another and complete it. You could put it in your window.
IF you wanted more of those flags or some to make bunting out of then here's two downloadables

Watch this Horrible Histories song about VE day. https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/watch/horrible-histories-songs-ve-day-song

Then research about food rationing on http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/war/rationing2.html
and afterwards why not follow a recipe based on what people would have been able to bake with their ration allowance. Here's one I've done with my classes before.

(this is just a suggestion; please don't feel obliged to do it wink

Honey Cakes
Ingredients
1 level teaspoon sugar
2½ oz margarine
2 Level tablespoons honey
6 oz self-raising flour
1 level teaspoon cinnamon
Quantity 16 to 20

Method
Beat together the sugar and margarine until the mixture is soft and creamy, then add the honey.
Sift together the flower and cinnamon.
Add to the creamy mixture with a spoon until it binds together then work it with your fingers until it is soft smooth dough.
Flour your hands, take off a piece of dough about the size of a large walnut and roll between the palms of hands until it is a smooth ball.
Put onto a slightly greased tin and flatten slightly.
Continue until all the dough has been used up.
Bake in a moderately hot oven until the cakes are done - about 15 mines.

Whilst you're baking you could listen to some of these songs which we often link to World War 2 or during that time.

A bit different to Stormzy and marshmello isn't it?

Also on the English Heritage page TOMORROW (not today!), there's all sorts going on. Here's the schedule
12:00 (BST): Lindy Hop Dance Tutorial with Nancy Hitzig
14:00: Second World War-Inspired Makeup Tutorial
15:00: The Nation's Toast
17:00: Dance for VE Day with Lindy Hop Dance Troupe and Band

So if there's something on there which you'd like to watch then here's the link https://www.facebook.com/pg/englishheritage/events/

I would love to see if anyone has managed to pull off doing the Lindy hop dance - It's for adults too and it's a bank holiday so they'll have plenty of time to dance with you I'm sure wink

Here are some adverts I've seen about VE day ideas - so why not spend some time preparing for ways in which you can celebrate it.

If you do anything special tomorrow or over the weekend, I'd love to see it and share it on our page for Monday. What ever you do tomorrow, have a great day and take a moment to be thankful for those that stepped up to support the nation when in need. We can relate with it with the current situation. Not all heroes wear capes wink

Have a great extra-long weekend
