Maths

We've been doing negative numbers so for today's lesson I'd like you to research the bbc weather app https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather and search for 2 different cities. Let's say London and Nuuk (in Greenland). Then compare their difference in temperature. The difference between two numbers is called the range. So that's what I'll refer to it as from now on.
Draw a table in your maths book (like below) and find the difference between 7 pairs of locations.
What's the biggest range you can find?
Colder places will be high locations and towards the north/south poles. You could use an atlas or Google maps to find interesting places to compare.
P.S - it's likely to be only large towns/cities which will feature on the website.

P.S - Group 2 the answer to yesterday's challenge was 7 because...
3 = -1 + 4 or -3 + 6

8 = 4 + 4 or 2 + 6

English.

I completely forgot that yesterday was St George's day and I wanted to do something about him. Have you heard of St George? You should have! He's the saint of England and the symbol of our country.
The story we often hear of him is how he battled with a dragon and won to save the princess who was about to be fed to it. This story is considered a legend. But legends often stem from some sort of truth. We do believe there was a man named George who must have done something brave but it will have been changed over the years. Download this powerpoint to learn move about it

  -St George ppt.ppt-

Your task is to draw a dragon, it needs to be fearsome, no cute puppy eyes! sketch it with colour and make sure you think of elements which make it dangerous, horns, scales, teeth, barbed tails, fire breathing, wings and burning eyes! Then Please write some metaphors, similes and personifications just below it.
You might want to say his scales are strong but that doesn't sound convincing enough. What else is strong? A suit of armour, mountains, steel, rock.
so I'll say his scales are a suit of armour which no sword can penetrate.
You might want to say his eyes look scary. What other words are there for scary? Fear, terror.
Change it Fear spreads from his terrifying eyes.
His tail cracks like a whip - so let's make it a metaphor and say his tail is whip, thrasing terror down and striking anyone who goes near.
Use an online thesaurus to discover better words. (synonyms)
Here's some information on using metaphors with some fun videos https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zfkk7ty/articles/z9tkxfr

This website has many myths and legends on it, with pictures and is an audio. Choose from the list and listen to at least 2 different legends http://myths.e2bn.org/mythsandlegends/

Georgraphy.

Over Easter I asked you to sketch a landmark for us to identify - I've been sent some amazing sketches and most I could get straight away - one or two were harder but only because I didn't know the actual landmark!

Can you guess these two?

1)

2) - This is Jack's so guess which country he based his on...
Clue: It's famous because the president of the USA lives there

3) Meghan sketched this one. It's in our capital city and bongs every hour.

4) This is AJ's and this is more like a work of art! Amazing drawing! Do you know the name of this bridge? It can be found in a city called San Francisco.

5) Elijah decided to join in with our challenge and sent this beautiful looking building in.
It's found in India. Do you know what it's called?

 6) Now this one's tough and I bet you'll never get Thomas' - It's found in Peru, South America and they are the remains of an ancient civilisation. (Google it!)

7) Another one I didn't know straight away but I had heard of it - I just didn't know what it looked like. It's found in the very south of America in a state called Texas. It's famous because it was a building used when America and Mexico were fighting for where their borders would end. (both wanted more land) - Thanks Esme for making me do loads of research! cheeky

8) Richard's landmark is much closer to home. Infact it's just 60 miles away, up north. You might see it if you were going to Newcastle no. Bea, Thomas, you have no excuse to not know this one!

 9) Now I know we know this one - we all visited it last month - I think the lockdown life would have suited those monks who lived there.

10) Sorry, I can't have a quiz with 9 questions - that's just annoying so I've added one - Where's this place? Gladiators would fight for their lives here - often against lions too!

Answers:
1) Statue of Liberty,
2) The White House
3) Big Ben
4) The Golden Gate Bridge
5) Taj Mahal
6) Machu Picchu
7) The alamo
8) The angel of the North
9) Fountains Abbey
10) The Colosseum

How many did you get? Mrs Breckon managed to get 7. Mrs Acheson managed 8. How did you get on?

Task - download and print this map and identify the location of these landmarks by labeling their location. Use a ruler and an arrow to mark it. Also Google maps is a great way to see exactly where abouts they are.

Weekend challenge - Can you make a landmark or sky scraper building using junk (rubbish like cereal packets) I'd be impressed to see who can make the tallest free standing 'junk building' make it look eye catching with colours, windows and other features. Here are some examples of famous sky scraper buildings. It would be helpful if you can measure it - I want to see who gets the Class 4 record for making the tallest free-standing junk model! (picture evidence needed for title - a congratulations certificate will be sent to the winner laugh

Have a great weekend.
Mr Breckon.
