War Horse

24 Jan 2020

24th January 2020

Over the last few weeks we've spent our English lessons studying War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. It's set in pre-war Britain and follows the story through the war of Joey (a horse) and his experiences of it.

To develop our understanding of the context of the historical era it fits within, Mr and Mrs Collins came in to share a whole host of artefacts and information with us. We learnt about the conditions of the trenches and how it effected the nation, with a particular focus on Ripon's military connection.

We've unpicked the characters in the story and tried to imagine ourselves as them and reflect on their feelings. The main character, Albert, is a teenage boy who owned Joey and adored him, when his father rashly sold him to join the British army in 1914 without Albert's knowledge. Albert was able to catch a quick farewell with Joey after the sale and before he left for France. The children wrote a diary entry from Albert's point of view and were tasked with considering his feelings towards his father and to communicate the day in emotive and engaging way. Below are some excellent examples of this.
