Visit from a Treasure Hunter!
18 Nov 2022
Last Friday we were lucky enough to get a visit from Mr Vaughan, a metal detectorist, who shared with us some of his best finds from both the local area and further afield.
Mr Vaughan hooked all of class 3 immediately, by presenting a four-table long timeline! The timeline range was from the Stone Age to the present day. Our curiosity was developed as we each got a chance to pick an artifact at random: choosing a numbered card from one to twenty-eight. The children were fascinated to hold and study coins from the Roman, Tudor and Victorian eras alongside part of an axe and spearhead from the Bronze Age and various broaches, buttons and belt buckles.
During the final part of our experience, Mr Vaughan told us about the treasure he discovered last year, a gold loop, which now resides in a museum. He then kindly answered all of our questions (we had quite a few!) about metal detecting and researching finds. We very much enjoyed our morning and it helped put our Stone, Iron and Bronze Age learning into context.
Don’t forget to look out for the Roman statue that is missing its toe!
Hope everyone else has had a great week,
Mrs Field and Mr Gamble
