Friday 15th May

14 May 2020

Hi Class 3.

Woohoo! Is it Friday, well done for making it through another busy week. I've been really impressed by all of the work you have sent me this week, you are all working so hard! Well done for using your imaginations so well to create some great games and mega maps too, I really enjoyed looking at the maps and seeing the detail you had put on.

Maths

Year 3

Today we are going to work on our mental maths again and make sure that we are getting really quick at working things out in our heads. Hopefully you will remember playing some of these games before. We always have lots of fun when we play these in class and hopefully you enjoyed them at home last time too.

First, can you go on Rockstar maths and see how many coins you can earn in ten minutes, then can you do two "sound checks", please.

After that we are going to play some dice games. I've put some pictures below with different games on for you to look at.  Some of these you will be able to do in your head, but if you need to work your answers out on a piece of paper then that is fine.

You could also multiply the numbers together too.
For the tougher version choose a table, maybe your x6 s , and then roll the dice, add them and then times them by 6!
You could even keep track of your score and add each turn's score together to see who is the first to get to 100 points.

For this one you can change the number of digits and maybe roll the dice 4 times and then use those four numbers to see who can make the largest or smallest number.
Eg, if I rolled a 4,2,3 and a 1 I could make 4,321 as my biggest number. If my dog rolled 3 , 1, 1 and 2 he could only make 3,112 so I'd win (to be honest though I don't think he'd mind losing as long as he got a dog biscuit for trying).

We have played this one lots in class, it is one or my favourites to help with place value.

Year 4

Today we are going to continue with describing movement, but the difference will be that we might have to draw the shapes on today. If you have a ruler please use one to help keep your work neat and tidy. yes

For this it is easier to choose one point at a time .I'd start with A and do that one, then do B and so on.
It might help you to cut out a piece of paper and move it as you work to see how the shape looks when it is moved.

Now it is time to have a go at our worksheets. Remember to put the date and use a ruler if you have one, please.
For these you might not need to draw them, but if you wanted to draw the shape to help you to see how it moves then feel free to.

I've also put some challenge sheets at the bottom of the maths section if you would like a go at those instead.

On the last question there are so many possible answers that there isn't an answer sheet because all of the combinations wouldn't fit on! If you do that sheet please check it carefully after you've done it and myabe ask your grown up nicely if they could check it for you.

English

For our English today we are going to do a couple of shorter things to leave ourselves time for our special project which I'll tell you about in a minute!

For your English today I would like you to have a last run through of the spellings you chose at the start of the week and then do your spelling test. Good luck and I hope we get lots of full marks. smiley

After that I would like you to go on WordShark for about 15- 20 mins to work on our general spellings.
Yesterday I forgot to put the link on, sorry! It should be below:

https://onwordshark.com/grewelthorpe/login

Then when you have done that please do your half an hour reading. It is "Free Reading Friday" so you can read whatever you want (maybe some old Port Vale magazines, got through your collection of Port Vale annuals... you know, all the things that you love to read in class wink).

Afternoon activites.

Now, I bet you are wondering what our special project is aren't you? Well I'll tell you.....

We have been set a challenge to make a video of ourselves on an obstacle course. Check out the video below....

Obstacle challenge

I bet you clever people have worked out what your special project is now haven't you ? Yep, I would like you to design and make your own course!

There are a couple of things that you have to be careful of first. I would like you to draw your course out on paper first so you know what you will need and what it will look like, and then talk to your grown up about what your ideas are. It may seem like a brilliant idea to run over the roof of the shed to make your course more interesting but that will almost certainly end in a lot of pain and a broken shed. Seriously though, please be careful when you make your course and make sure that you are safe, that you only use things and areas that your grown-up is happy for you to use (especially if you live on a farm), and that your grown up knows what you are doing.

If you can it would be lovely if you could make a video of you on the course, but not everyone likes being filmed so if you just want to design your course on paper or take a photo of your course that is fine too (grown ups please feel free to have a go too - why should the children get all of the fun?!) I'm going to try and make one too at the weekend (although my garden is tiny sad) so I can't wait to see your ideas so that I can pinch some of them for my attempt.

If you watch the video again there are lots of ideas on there that you could use or change and you could even time yourself to see if you can get quicker after a few goes.

If you have any time left or want to do some extra work, you can use it to finish off any other work, and as always if you want to spend a bit of time doing Rockstar Maths, Reading Plus or anything else then feel free too.

We have one last, big , huge , important job to do too - please remember to say a huge thank you to your grown ups for helping you with your work this week and for supporting you with everything you have had to do.

Have lots of fun and be careful!

Mr G
