Storytime.

I'm really pleased to hear that so many of you were enjoying the poems that we were looking at. Today we are going to have a look at the first part of a very good story - George's Marvellous Medicine. The story is in about five parts so I'll put up a different chapter each day.

We started off reading this but we never finished it before we started lock down.  The man in this video is definitely a great story teller and he really brings the characters to life. Click on the cover and enjoy.

Collective Worship

Today, we're going to join Mrs Hebblewhite to think about Thankfulness.  To join in, please go to the Class 1 Page and look for the Collective Worship title and picture.

Reading task:

I would still like you to read for 30 minutes please. Ideally, I would like you to read your school reading book or a book that is similar in difficulty. However, if you choose to read something else then that's ok too. As long as you're reading, I'm happy. smiley

Spellings:

Don't forget to keep working on your spellings too. yes

Maths

Year 3

Today we are back to our Maths No Problem books, so if you can find those we are ready to begin. yes

Here it looks a bit strange but they have taken the 80p and split it in two.
This is because when you add up it is easier to add the 30p to the 70p of the bag
to make it up to the next whole pound.
This shows how they have added the 30 and the 70p together.

Remember, you can always use column addition to help you, and that is probably the best way
to solve the problems.

Now can you complete pages 14-15 in your Maths No Problem books, please.

Here are the answers, yr 3s.

If you haven't put the "and" sign in and have written it as £63.21 then don't worry, both are fine for today.

Year 4

Today's lesson can be quite tricky and there is a definite way of looking at these problems. Once you see the trick though they should be ok.
Bar models are becoming more popular in maths questions and it is always good to go back and revise them and check how they are used.

Submarine group I'd like you to have a look at these too and I've put the sheets on for you today.

The present costs £16.20, but it doesn't say how they split the cost. Do they do it equally or are there other ways?

It seems strange but here you would divide the cost by 5 first. This is beacuse if you look carefully there are five bars,
not four. So work out what one bar is worth by dividing by 5 to see how much the boy pays, and then times his answer
by 4 to see how much the girl pays - this is because she pays 4 times more then he does.
Clue - look at how many parts or parts there on for each part and then divide the cost by that number.
a  would be 2, b would be 3 and so on.

Writing Task.

Good news! Space command were so impressed by the quality of your plans and descriptions of your planets that they are going to give everyone the chance to go to your planet! They would like to make your planet a holiday destination.

As you know the planet better than anyone else in the galaxy they would like you to design a holiday brochure or poster to persuade people to visit.

You will need to have a think about what makes your planet so great. Maybe if it is an ice planet you can offer all year round skiing or snowboarding holidays, or if your planet is full of interesting animals you might want to run a safari to go and see them. Maybe you have a 5 star luxury hotel with a pool you can sit in and watch the rings of saturn float past.

I've put some ideas from brochures below to help you and to give you some ideas. Feel free to take any of the ideas in the brochures and put them in your work. If you would like to do it for a real planet then that is fine too because lots of you have researched some great facts you can use.

 Topic work

The project this week aims to provide opportunities for your child to learn more about space. Learning may focus on our Solar System, the Sun and the Moon. It could look at life in outer space from the view of an astronaut and travelling through space.

 ● Our Solar System- Encourage your child to think about what they already know about space and create a mind map. Can they name the planets in our solar system? Can they remember them in order or create their own mnemonic to help them? Ask your child to research the characteristics of the planets e.g What is it made of? What size is it? How close to the Sun is it? Temperature? Can they create a fact file, PowerPoint or Google Slide presentation on a planet of their choice? These facts about Mars or these facts about space may be a good starting point.

 ● Blast off!- Ask your child to design a new spacesuit suitable for an astronaut. They will need to consider which materials would be most suitable, comfort for the astronauts and the temperature in space. Encourage them to design a logo for the spacesuit too. Perhaps they could make this using materials from around the home?

 ● Astronaut Aerobics-  Astronauts have to be fit and agile for their missions to space. Ask your child to design a fitness workout to put your stamina to the test! Can you find your pulse and count your heart rate before and after exercising? Recommendation at least 2 hours of exercise a week.

 ● Out of this World- Ask your child if space travel was made more accessible and they could go on holiday to space, would they like to be the first space tourist? Can they think of arguments for and against being the first space tourist? Is it unethical for millionaires to spend their money on space tourism or should they spend all their money on reducing poverty? Ask them to prepare a speech about this discussion point.

 ● One Giant Leap for Mankind - Ask your child to find out about Neil Armstrong. Who was he and what challenges did he have to overcome during his life? Can they write a biography or create a piece of drama about Neil Armstrong’s life and achievements?
