Class 3 Friday 12th June
11 Jun 2020
Hi again. Well done, we've made it through to Friday!!
Maths
Reading and spellings.
I'm sure you know what I'm going to say now don't you? That's right mind-readers, 30 minutes reading and then work on your spellings too, please. Once you have had a last look through your spellings it is time for the highlight of the week - the spelling test!
Ask your grown up to test you and see how you do.
Today could you do one activity on Reading Plus, please. It has been a while since we have used that so it would be good to keep it going.
Writing
This week I've been really impressed by your writing skills because we have covered lots! We have done three different types of poem, grammar work, not to mention all of the writing we have been doing for our topic work. For today's lesson we are going to do something that will really help to take our writing to the next level - we are going to use....fronted adverbials.
Sometimes when you are writing it can be really easy to be tempted to start your sentence the same way each time, but if you use fronted adverbials it stops this happening and can make your writing really fun to read.
Have a look at the video below and it will tell you a bit about what fronted adverbials are.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zwwp8mn/articles/zp937p3
Below is a picture I found "lion" around that we can use to help us.
Here we have lots of fronted advebials that we could use as sentence starters. Instead of saying "The parrot flew above the clouds" , I could say " Above the clouds, the parrot flew silently over the forest". Then instead of saying "The jaguar sat quietly on the branch" I could write " Without a sound, the Jaguar sat silently on the branch". If I do this it stops me starting all of my sentences with "the" so it stops it sounding the same each time.
Task
What I would like you to do is to have a look at the picture below and think about how you could describe the rainforest. You could really use you imagination and think about what you could hear, see or even smell in the forest too. For each sentence pick a fronted adverbial to start, and then see if you can describe the rainforest.
( If you would like to choose your own picture then feel free too, the aim is to write sentences with fronted adverbials so any picture will work for this).
For example, you could say "Slowly, the trees sway in the wind", or "Over there, the monkey is sitting in the tree"
Fancy a challenge? Don't forget to use some great adjectives too, and to keep it neat and tidy as well.
Eg, "As quick as a flash, the emerald green snake lunged at the passing mouse as it scurried past."
Have fun, jungle explorers.
