Monday 18th May

17 May 2020

Hi Class 3.

I hope you had a lovely weekend and got up to lots of exciting things. Thanks very much for the videos of the courses you've made, I've sent them to Mrs A. If anyone else would like to send one in then feel free to and I'll pass that on too - I think we have a bit longer left to make them so don't worry. yes

As always, we'll start with a quick look at some of the things we have been up to. You have been really busy this week and produced some wonderful work.

Maths

Today both groups will be moving on to a new topic, it is something that we haven't done for a while but it is a topic that we usually enjoy - money!

We will be jumping around in our books to find the right section (don't get excited, you don't really get to jump on your book, no footprints, please wink) so please check the page numbers carefully.

Do you recognise any of the notes or coins? Most grown-ups use a card to pay for things now so you might not see all of the coins very often. If you get chance maybe ask a grown-up to show you some of the coins, or if you are lucky you might have a piggy bank with some in.
To add up money we usually start with the pounds and then add up the pennies.

When we write our answers we use a dot between the pounds and pence to make it easy to read , so £3 and 40 p is £3.40. This is important because it helps us know how much money there is. I don't want to pay £340 pound for a cake that is really £3.40 ! (If anyone does want to buy a cake for £340 please send the money to "Mr Gamble get rich quick schemes at Grewelthorpe school). cheeky

This links in with our decimal work, and money links in very closely with decimals. See if you can notice a link between how we write pounds and pence, and how we record some decimals.

Also, when we write money we still write the pennies as two digits.  In decimals we wouldn't write and extra zero after the point, but in money we do (not all countries do, but we do).

Eg £3 and 40 p is written as £3.40, not £3.4

Just like last week there are a couple of challenge sheets below if you would like to try them.

Please note - you don't use £ and p, just one so it is £2.70, not £2.70p .

English

For our English we are going to do a reading comprehension. In your reading packs there should be a couple of reading comprehensions tucked away somewhere (it has been a while since I made the packs up so I'm hoping there is still one in there and it hasn't been eaten my your hamster!).

When I made the packs up I made them so that there ended up being lots of different combinations for different people,  so I'm not going to be able to put all of the ones up as it would fill the webpage! Your pack hopefully has two in it though (maybe more if you were lucky - and yes, having extra work is lucky
cheeky), and I would like you to pick one and then complete it . Hopefully the answers are in with it too, they should be on the last page of the comprehension. yes

If you can't find one in your pack then please go on Reading Plus and do two activities on that instead.

Afternoon activity

This may or may not be possible, depending what you have at home so it's optional but I've seen on my walks that there are a lot of painted rocks around. They are really fun to find and I love to find or hide them with my little boy when we go to the park. Sometimes they are from a long way away too; we found one that had the place it was painted written on and it came from Cornwall! Thinking about it, it must have taken the stone years to walk that far.

They do brighten places up and many of them have messages of support on or encouraging pictures. If you have paint around perhaps you could paint some smooth rocks/stone and place them around your local area or garden (please be careful and check with a grown up if you are going to hide them though as we need to stay safe - I don't want anyone putting their hand in a hole in a tree to hide a stone and getting bitten by an annoyed squirrel.

Here are some examples:

Also, don't forget to do your half an hour reading too. Have a great afternoon,
