Celebrating Black History Month

21 Oct 2022

Black History Month
This week we have been finding out about the cultural heritage of the United Kingdom. We found out that lots of people came to the UK in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s from the Caribbean Islands. One of those people was the famous TV presenter Floella Benjamin.

Where is the Caribbean?

How would living in the Caribbean been different to the UK?
We worked in groups to research the animals, houses, weather, fruits and beaches. Then we told the rest of the class what we had found out.

Bunting for our celebration on Friday
There were lots of new things to learn - threading a needle, using a template, cutting fabric, running stitch, sewing on buttons!

After we had practiced our new skills we designed and made our own.

Then all the pieces were joined together so that we could wave our bunting whilst singing the Caribbean song 'Tinga Layo' with the whole school.

Other events this week
We have been very busy this week but still managed to fit in our mini-marathon run and a pond workshop!

RE
In RE we have been learning about how Muslims welcome a new baby by whispering a special prayer in his/her ear called the 'Call to prayer'. Also the baby's hair is gently shaved, weighed and then that weight of gold is given to charity. We compared how Christians and Mulsims welcome new babies.
