Japanese Week

26 Jun 2021

Tao Drumming
On Monday it was marvelous. We lined up at the hall and waited for our drumming lesson to begin. We were all very excited. When we got in I couldn't believe my eyes....there so many drums! They were in a big circle and we sat in the middle of them. First we watched a video of some professional Tao drummers. It was amazing! They were very noisy and they moved around loads. It looked like it was hard work being a drummer. The Japanese drummer told us about all the kinds of drum and what they were called. On the top of the drum was cow skin and he had made most of them himself. The drums were all different sizes, some were big, some were small and there was an enormous drum on a stand. He taught us lots of things on the drums and even taught us a song that we got to play and sing. Half of the class played one piece of music and the other half played a different beat. It was lots of fun and we kept swapping drums so that we could have a go at all the different types. Finally he did a cool song for us and he danced and played the drums. For the last bit he jumped in the air. It was one of the best sounds I had ever heard. I loved it so much I wanted him to do it again! When he finished the performance we all clapped.

Cherry Blossom Painting
There are lots of famous Japanese paintings of cherry blossom. We had a go at creating our own using charcoal and finger painting.

A Japanese Harp
The Japanese harp is called a Koto and it sounds beautiful. One side is tuned and the other is not so you need to make sure that you are playing on the right part of the strings.
