The Crown Inn - Grewelthorpe
14 Sep 2023
Dear Grewelthorpe Parents,
Hopefully you will have seen the recent WhatsOn email and fliers about the village bid to save The Crown pub and turn it into a vibrant, welcoming community asset. As you may know, we have received a fantastic response to the Share Pledge scheme towards the purchase and refurbishment of The Crown - £172k of pledges raised from 115 “investors”. ( The Pledge scheme remains live on the Friends of The Crown website https://fotc.org.uk/ so any more pledges gratefully received). This was a good result and gave us the confidence to make an offer to Admiral Taverns for the purchase of the pub. This process may take some time and we expect Admiral to place the pub on the open market now that the Asset of Community Value moratorium is over, so the more we can raise the better.
In the meantime, we are getting on with the application for a grant from the Community Ownership Fund – and this is the reason for this email !
It will be a huge help to our grant application if we could get emails/letters showing there is support from village “groups.”
I am emailing to see if you would be willing to write a letter/email letting us know the ways in which you, as families, might use the pub, to show it would serve a purpose beyond just being a pub and that there is a real community demand for it.
Please note – this is not about locking in what finally happens with the pub – it is just to show there is support and ideas from the village, so we can make a grant application. Don’t worry – there will be plenty of time to plan if we succeed!
If possible, please email us at fotcgrewelthorpe@gmail.com to say: ‘We’d love the pub to reopen as a community pub because…. ‘ And fill in the blank!
To help kickstart the process, here are a few ideas to get your views on. Please do add any ideas of your own on how the pub could provide something useful for young people and families.
-
- Public loos for those using playground when village hall is closed (ie after school)
- Open after school serving snacks and drinks
- Games room – pool, table tennis, darts, etc for older kids who currently have nowhere to meet
- Quiz night – could be used as a FROGS fundraiser event
- Renovated beer garden, with play area
- Parking for school run and users of the playground/village green/bus stop (if bought privately, the village may lose access to this car park)
- Events eg drinks and catering/birthday parties/food on Bonfire night
- Family friendly affordable menu
- Shop selling bread, things for packed lunch (sandwiches, drinks, crips etc) especially before and after school and weekends
- Accommodation for visitors including a family room
