Judaism Day - 25.01.23
25 Jan 2023
Each year, we focus on a different world religion for our World Faith of the Year. This year we are learning all about Judaism, and today we spent the whole day finding out lots about this faith.
We started the day altogether in the hall for an introduction to Judaism. The children also got into their pupil voice groups as they spent the day together in them today. We always love seeing the children work together in this way as it gives them the opportunity to spend time with children they don't usually, and it's so nice to see the older children supporting the younger children so well.
The children all took part in four sessions today, all with a different focus.
One activity focused on the key beliefs of Jews, particularly around the Torah. They discovered how the Torah is the most important and holy text in Judaism, and that the 10 commandments are recorded in it.
Another activity was based around the Jewish ceremonies, the Bar Mitzvah and the Bat Mitzvah. These ceremonies happen when boys are 13 and girls are 12. They mark the time that they start taking on responsibilities for their religous life.
The third activity was based on the important Jewish festivals Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur is the most sacred and solemn day in the Jewish calendar. Yom Kippur always occurs 10 days after Rosh Hashanah.
The last activity was about Jewish worship, Shabbat. Shabbat begins on Friday evening and ends at sunset on Saturday. During this time, many Jews will visit the Synagogue.
There has been a lovely feel around school today as the children have produced some wonderful work, and have learnt lots of new knowledge.
We are looking forward to our visit to Bradford Jewish Synagogue next month.
