Nidderdale High - Y6 transition event cancelled - 1st and 8th of July
18 Jun 2021
We have recieved the following letter from Nidderdale High regarding the transition days;
Dear Headteacher
As you will have seen, the DfE has recently published the following advice on transition days for year 6 students:
“You should complete thorough risk assessments before running transitional, taster and open days in your setting, to ensure that they are run in line with your system of controls and align with the advice contained within the guidance for your setting and the roadmap out of lockdown.
This means that traditional transitional and open days are unlikely to be feasible this academic year, but we are keen not to restrict individual settings from designing events which maintain the integrity of bubbles or consistent groups and adhere to the system of controls in place.”
The three main aims of our transition days are:
- to allow students to experience a normal day as a secondary school student
- to meet a range of classmates from different primary settings
- to start to find their way around their secondary school
We have thought long and hard about how we might create some form of transition day that would be worthwhile and meaningful for Year 6 students based on these three aims but given the current safety regulations that Year 6 students should not mix with others beyond their primary school bubble, it is with deep regret that we will have to cancel our traditional transition days due to be held on the 1st and 8th of July. Whilst some secondary schools may be able to offer transition days to groups of students from the same primary school, we have felt that with so many feeder primary schools this would not be a feasible alternative for us, with many students the only Year 6 pupil at their current primary school coming to Nidderdale. We are currently looking to deliver our usual transition programme during the first week of secondary school. For students currently in Year 6, the first day of attendance will be on Tuesday 7th September, when only Year 7 and 8 students will be in school and we will continue to deliver a range of transition activities across this first week.
We will also offer a range of virtual transition resources and opportunities and will do all we can to facilitate a successful transition from primary to secondary school. We will be in touch with further information and resources for virtual transition that can be used either in primary school or at home. We have also written directly to parents of Year 6 students to explain the changes to transition days this year.
