FROGS – Friends of Grewelthorpe School

Dear parents,

It is a little later in the term that our usual “WELCOME BACK” email, but..........

And a warm welcome to all new parents and families who have joined us at the school over the last few weeks!

For those of you who are new to the school, FROGS (Friends of Grewelthorpe school) is a charity that aims to support the school in providing life-enriching experiences to the children, which may not otherwise be covered by the primary school budget. Our aim is to support and advance the education of all the pupils at our school. More information about FROGS, and ways in which you can become involved, are included in the “FROGS New Parent Welcome Letter” attached to this email.

Fundraising during the Coronavirus Pandemic:

Obviously, a lot of our usual fundraising events cannot take place under the current restrictions of the pandemic. Bake sales, Christmas fairs, and Jumble Sales have all had to come to a grinding halt over the last few months! Fortunately, there are still a few socially distanced, and COVID-safe fundraising options available to us, which will allow us to continue to move towards our fundraising goals for the new classroom build as well as continuing to support the school in the provision of enriching experiences and opportunities for our children during this challenging time.

Pandemic-friendly fundraising opportunities include:

  1. The Big PTA Raffle 2020!!

The Big PTA Raffle 2020 is a nationwide raffle run by Parentkind (a membership organisation that supports PTA’s and friends' groups for schools, of which we are a member). Tickets for the raffle cost £3, and each ticket gets entered into 12 separate draws. The top prize per draw is £5000! So, each £3 ticket gives you 12 chances of winning up to £5000!! The 12 draws will take place daily from Monday December until Friday 18th December.

  1. The Rag Bag Textile Bank:

We have a Rag Bag textile bank which raises money for the school and is located in the Car Park of The Crown pub in Grewelthorpe. It is in the far-right hand corner of the car park (often hidden by the white van that is parked there – so look behind that if you can’t see it!).

Under normal circumstances we make around £100 a year from clothing donations that are dropped into our clothing bank. Our hope/expectation this year is that we can make much more from this COVID-safe fundraising opportunity – especially since we have all been at home much more “re-organising” things, and with no charity shops accepting any of our unwanted items at the moment! The collection bin will accept:

o   Wearable clothing (no stains, rips, or school/business specific logos) – if it is good enough to sell on to someone, then it is good enough for the collection bin!

o   Paired shoes

o   Handbags

o   Belts

So, if you were thinking of taking any of these items to the charity shop when they next opened, then please think about the FROGS charity as an alternative place to donate your pre-loved items!

  1. All My Own Work:

We are asking all the children to produce some wonderful artwork that can be immortalised on your choice of product to buy as lovely keepsakes or Christmas gifts. There will a choice of products such as aprons, bags, tea towels (product type to be confirmed – details to follow), as well as Christmas cards. The school gets £1 to £2.50 per item sold, allowing us to make £200-£400 from this project in past years!

Watch out for order forms and further information in your inbox over the next few weeks!

  1. The Giving Machine:

The Giving Machine is a website you can go through to access your usual online retailers like Amazon (amongst 2000 other top retailers). Everytime you buy something through the Giving Machine Website or App, you generate money for your chosen charity.

Grewelthorpe School are one of the charities signed up to receive funds in this way, so just search for us when you sign up as a “Giver” on their website or via their App.

How it works

Set up a Giver account on TheGivingMachine and then just visit TheGivingMachine website, desktop reminder or mobile app and click on the retailer link you want to shop at. Purchases generate a donation which will show on your account summary once processed by our Machine.

How is it free?

Every year online shops pay millions in sales commissions to other websites that direct shoppers      to them (e.g. search engines and voucher code websites). At TheGivingMachine we turn these           commissions into donations for your favourite schools and charitable causes, at no extra cost to        you

  1. Greener Grewelthorpe Eco Shop:

In 2018 and 2019, the Class 4 children studies the topic of plastic and its environmental impact. Thanks to their passionate work on the topic, we all are becoming increasingly aware of the damaging effects of plastic on our environment. This prompted the Class 4 children to look at ways in which we can reduce our consumption of plastic during our daily lives, and they came up with the idea of researching and marketing plastic free alternatives to common household items to their local community.

As part of this Young Enterprise project, the...
